Shohei Furutachi is a senior research fellow at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour, University College London. He received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Tokyo, where he studied the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neural development. As a postdoctoral researcher in the laboratories of Tom Mrsic-Flogel and Sonja Hofer, first at the University of Basel and later at University College London, he investigated the neural circuit mechanisms underlying predictive processing in the visual system.

Furutachi’s research seeks to understand how the brain builds and updates internal models of the world using sensory prediction errors—the mismatch between predicted and actual sensory inputs. His work focuses on the neural circuit mechanisms that compute these errors and how they update internal models to support adaptive learning. He also investigates how alterations in these computations contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder.

Furutachi’s honors include the University College London Early Career Neuroscience Prize and research funding from the Gatsby Initiative for Brain Development and Psychiatry.
