Alexander Li Cohen is a physician-scientist and instructor in the Department of Neurology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He received his B.A. in biology and biomedical physics from Washington University in St. Louis and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He then completed residency training in pediatrics and child neurology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and clinical and post-doctoral fellowships in pediatric behavioral neurology and translational research in neurodevelopmental disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Cohen’s current research focuses on identifying which brain circuits are involved in the generation of specific features seen in autism spectrum disorder (e.g., alteration of face recognition, infantile spasms or aggression), using network neuroimaging techniques that apply insight gained from people with different conditions (i.e., “bedside-to-beside” translation) and then validating these insights with prospective functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) studies with the larger goal of generating treatment targets for clinical trials of non-invasive neuromodulation using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and real-time fMRI neurofeedback. He continues to care for patients in the Autism Spectrum Center and Behavioral Neurology Clinic as part of the new multidisciplinary Brain, Mind & Behavior Center at Boston Children’s Hospital.
